Mining Engineering in Canada
Dr. Ferri Hassani obtained his B Sc.of Mining Engineering and PhD from Nottingham University, England in 1976 and 1981 respectively.He is a Webster Chair Professor of Mining Engineering at McGill University and director of Geo-mechanics labs and Earth/Mine Energy Research Group(EMERG). He became a professional Engineer in 1983 England.
He was given Canadian Rock Mechanics award of Rock Engineering Society of CIM in 1992. He was made the Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for his contribution to the mining industry in Canada in 2010. Recently he was awarded Boleslaw Krupinski Gold Medal from the world mining organization of IOC 2013.
He has been at McGill University since 1983 and many years in a leadership role . His focus evolved from rock mechanics and mine design, to mining and energy and waste heat recovery from mining operation, Mine tailing and dewatering, mine waste disposal and management ,mine fill .
He was the co-founder of the Canadian Mining innovation council (CMIC) and Co- chaired this unique unit for two years and was on the board of directors till 2013.
He has been advisor to number of governments on the mining issues and consultant to many major mining companies around the globe.
He maintains a strong interdisciplinary research and has graduated over 170 PhD and MEng. Students, as well as research assistants, Post-Doctoral fellows, Research associates and published over 160 scientific articles and reports. He has several patents .
He has collaborated internationally with mining industry and universities from, England, USA, China and Qatar, Australia, South America . .
He recently chaired the World Mining Congress 2013 with great success (2500 delegates from 65 countries attended and 600 papers presented) and has been given the honor of chairing the International society of Rock Mechanics Congress in 2015.
He was awarded the honorary ambassador of Montreal in 2011 by Provincial Government .
